In the year 2020, amidst relaxed COVID restrictions, high school football teams had found their footing in the “new normal”. The Edna Karr Cougars journey, with their sights set on a fifth consecutive state title, had their dream dashed by Carencro in the 4A state championship.
Next season, the Cougars, still vying for the playoffs, came up against another team from Acadiana — Westgate — in the semifinals. Jaboree Antoine, a junior defense back, recalls, “It was really a great experience. Being able to play as a freshman in a big game like that.”
However, the Tigers emerged victorious with a 27-20 win, going on to secure their inaugural championship the following week.
This thrilling journey is captured in the Hulu documentary “Algiers, America”. It portrays two challenging seasons for the Cougars, showcasing rigorous field workouts and tumultuous off-field days for several athletes.
“They’re a top line program. That’s still what we aspire to be,” admits head coach Ryan Antoine. He notes, “For them to win six straight or however many they won, that’s hard to do in our level of Louisiana football.”

“We all have our unique stories to share. Stepping onto that football field helps us express who we are,” an athlete notes.
The challenges of coaching young athletes from these urban areas, often grappling with difficult home situations, are stark. However, despite their off-field struggles, their shared goal remains steadfast – to win championships, and more importantly, to succeed in life. Edna Karr Cougars Journey.
“Football is the last thing we talk about. We’re often that guiding figure dealing with school or academics. These kids bring much more to the table than just football. It’s their escape. We’ll handle many things outside of football before getting to the game. Reaching a Friday night here involves much more than just the sport,” the coach concludes.
