As the dust settled on the 2022 season, Grand Forks High School Football emerged triumphant, with Central and Red River teams igniting a wave of enthusiasm. Together, they accomplished an impressive 12 victories and both teams secured coveted playoff positions. This achievement was more than just a win – it was a significant landmark. Not since 1995 had both teams simultaneously graced the postseason. As we look forward to the 2023 season, the excitement is palpable and expectations high.
Hoping to ride the wave of this momentum, the Knights and Roughriders seized the opportunity to commence practice on the earliest allowable day for North Dakota high school football in 2023.
A Look Back at Red River’s Memorable 2022 Season
Red River had a memorable run in 2022, making it to the state semifinals for the first time since 1991 and ending the season with an 8-3 record. Though they faced defeat against Jamestown with a 27-13 score, largely due to an injury to their starting quarterback Pearce Parks, it was a season to remember.
This year, Parks, an all-state selection in his sophomore year, is back in action for his junior season. In his debut season as a starter, he showed impressive stats, with 91 completions from 140 passes for 1,217 yards and 10 touchdowns. Parks also rushed 79 times for 379 yards and nine touchdowns.
While the Roughriders will have to compensate for the loss of their top three rushing options, as well as their leading wide receiver and tight end from 2022, they can bank on the all-state pick, Lawson Lotysz, to fortify their offensive line.
Central’s 2022 Achievements and 2023 Expectations
On the other hand, Central managed to clinch at least four games in 2022 for the first time since 2007, ending with a 4-6 record. However, they will have to fill the shoes of starting quarterback Dylan Lamont, who was the leading passer in the Eastern Dakota Conference.
Despite Lamont’s absence, the Knights will have a strong passing game with the return of their top three wide receivers from 2022. Jack Simmers, Tray Kuntz, and Leo Strandell will be the ones to watch, with Simmers leading the EDC in receiving yards in the previous season.
Both teams will kickstart their season on August 18, with away games. Central is scheduled to play against Watford City at 4 p.m., while Red River will face Williston at 7 p.m.
Football fans should mark their calendars for August 25, when the newly installed artificial turf at Cushman Field will host its first game. The match will feature Red River squaring off against Jamestown, providing a thrilling rematch of last year’s state semifinals.
