A Season of Change: Suspension of L.B. Landry High School Football Coach

Following player eligibility complications, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) has imposed a season-long suspension on Noel Ellis Sr., the football coach of L.B. Landry High School in New Orleans. Carl Spicer Jr., previously a member of Landry’s coaching team for three seasons, assumed the interim head coach position in May. L.B. Spicer, a St. Paul’s alumnus, aims to develop the program in Ellis’s absence. As he remarked, “My objective is to cultivate and fully leverage our chances this year. If Coach Ellis returns next season, I intend to ensure he returns to an improved environment than the one he left behind.”

Ellis’s suspension stems from an eligibility dispute which resulted in Landry’s forfeiture of a first-round playoff match last season. Despite a modest regular-season record of 3-7, Landry managed to secure the 14th seed in the Division II select playoffs. However, the eligibility concerns led to the forfeiture of their first-round game against Vandebilt Catholic.

Prior to his promotion, Spicer served two seasons under the leadership of former head coach Keenan Lewis and continued on the team following Ellis’s appointment. Spicer initially joined Landry as an offensive line coach, progressing to offensive coordinator in his second year and defensive line coach and director of football operations last season. L.B. Having ceased his playing career due to an injury during his senior season at St. Paul’s, Spicer pursued his studies at Southeastern Louisiana, obtaining degrees in criminal justice and sociology.

As Landry continues to prepare for the new season, about 40 players are attending summer conditioning sessions. Last season saw the graduation of 28 seniors. The coaching team will be enhanced with former Edna Karr standout Munchie Legaux serving as offensive coordinator and Elcee Refuge taking on the role of defensive coordinator.
